Work.

I'm going back to work at camp. It's going to be a blast, and a whole lot of work. Here's a countdown until I get back on August 15th:

I'll try to put up mini-posts on my days off. Also, check my twitter stream on this page. *Update* I'd love it if my readers could do what they did last year. Use the comments section as a Twitter feed every day. Let me know what you ate for breakfast. Or anything. It'll be a lot of fun to read them when I get back!

Oh, wait you'll be at church on Sunday...

By the way, I had granola for breakfast, in case you were wondering.^.^

  3. Last night I watched some of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

For breakfast I ate some leftover granola (homemade), Honey Nut Cheerios, and this other stuff that I don't remember the name of. >.<

Me only commenting is getting boring. :[___]

I think I'll get an Android, well not now but when my iPhone dies.

  5. This morning I ate a pitiful amount of granola followed by this amazing cereal made by "Mom's Best Natural Foods", the name of which I cannot remember. The box of the cereal has a nauseating array of information on the manufacturer's "Green initiatives" and how it uses oh so much electricity from wind farms and that it is equivalent to taking just so many cars off of the road. Blgrk.

While younger siblings were at swim lessons, I supervised even younger siblings at a nearby playground. Elisabeth went halfway down a slide and then became terrified and didn't want to go further. After a great deal of convincing she went the rest of the way and promptly exclaimed: "I like this!".

Since I've learned the distinguishing properties of Helvetica, I've realized that it's everywhere. Astonishing, really.

This afternoon I biked to HPL where I manned the junior reading program desk for an hour and ten minutes. In dull moments I cleaned books. You don't realize how filthy-dirty they are until you look at the paper towel you were using and notice how black it is. Ugh. I hope they clean books often. I saw Rebecca Cullum, she stated that she "didn't know I was volunteering". Why do people say things like that? The only fitting response is "well, now you know". Biking back home I realized that it's more uphill going back. But is it? It did seem like there were more ups than downs, but it might be that I'm a wimp who has no muscle.

WWDC is a huge disappointment so far. Everything is just whoop-de-doo. The Macbook Air is same-old, same-old, OSX is SAMEASBEFORE, and iOS, although it looks much better, nothing has really changed. The only possibly interesting thing is the new Mac Pro. The problem is that it looks like a black ceramic trash can. How can anyone take it seriously? "Hey man, really sorry, but when I had to rid of my gum I thought that was where it was supposed to go. Didn't realize it was a computer!"

    Phblt. :|

    1. I think I know which cereal you are talking about, and yeah, the whole "green energy" thing is annoying. When I volunteered at HPL a few years back, they didn't make us clean books. We got to sit and read books.
I don't like biking. I prefer driving my van. Much less work.

Just looked at the Mac Pro, and yeah it looks like a trash can.

Talk about expandability! Just look at all of those extra pci slots!

      That thing is hilariously tiny.
The trash can in my room is only a little smaller than the Mac Pro!

    3. Trash can, that's exactly what I thought when I saw it. :D

    4. I tried using HTML "tags" to denote sarcasm in the second paragraph about the Mac Pro. Didn't work, though.

  6. Hey Seth, I got a usb-powered microcontroller recently, and it's really cool. I can program it in C or C++ to control outputs and inputs. I have a kit to build an interface that allows me to switch AC power. (Think computer-controlled christmas lights)

On another note, Adobe recently announced that they were no longer going to make their CS# products. They are migrating fully to the Creative Cloud subscription service. That means that if someone wants something newer than CS6, they have to rent it for something like $50/month. You have to buy 12 months worth to start out. That makes it impractical and financially not worth it for me. Me = :`(

Anyhoo, have a great time at camp!

    1. To answer your question:

It was good! Stephen talked about the 3 act story structure, and used Toy Story as a example. Benjamin and I were like the only people there that had not watched it, so we just took his word for it. >.<

We also watched this AMAZING short, (well I think so) called "The Black Hole," I thought it was very well done.

  14. Went to a friend's grad party today. We were throwing knives into a cardboard box. We found a spoon and tried throwing that. I got it stuck into the box 6 times! No one else got more than 2. Me == HAPPY!

Played darts and discovered that I am horrible. XP
Darts in the walls, I broke like 5 tips (they were cheap plastic) and missed the board about 30% of the time. Got one real bullseye, though.

I decided yesterday that if I had to go into the military, I would pick the Navy. I like ships and submarines more than helicopters and humvees.

Anyway, I have to go help put the cover on our pool. (it's up to 73 degrees now)

I'll try to post a review of the movie Life of Pi later.

I also watched The Princess Bride again a couple days ago. That movie is excellent. Seth, I'm looking at you. I've also read the book, The Princess Bride. It might be the closest parallel between a book and its film adaption that I've ever seen. Might have something to do with that the book's author also wrote the screenplay. But the book is really good too. It also has a very interesting plot device (in addition to the grandfather telling the story) which makes reading the book quite worthwhile, if only to see it in action.

  31. Oh, and speaking of reading, the book I've been engrossed in recently is Basic Economics, by Thomas Sowell. Excellent, excellent book. It is six hundred some pages long (you could refer to it as an authoritative tome), but unlike most such books it is neither dry, nor boring. The writing is fantastic, and Sowell presents basic economic principles (and how they manifest themselves in various economic systems) in easy to understand language and using a wide variety of examples from the real world. It really ought to be required reading in any high-school education. It is also a something of a manifesto on the benefits of the free-market - although it is not explicitly a book about the advantages of free-market economies, the evidence, logic, and explanations of the economic principles of prices, profits and losses, incentives, wages, etc. make it clear which system is vastly preferable.

It is so good, I'm going to put it in my extemp box next speech season.

  55. I tried firing my potato cannon last night, but it turns out that the propellant was bad and the sparker needed new flint.

Went tubing at my cousins' grandparents' place today. We wiped out 3 times! That tube was not very stable!

Tried kayaking as well. It's easier than canoeing.

Between my cousin and I, we ate an entire bowl of blueberries.
The city here has a tradition of shooting off fireworks over Lake Michigan on the 3rd of July. After the fireworks at Freedom Fest, these were kind of disappointing.

    1. Yeah, we saw the fireworks in Milton, and they weren't as good as the ones at Freedom Fest.

    2. I respectfully disagree, although there were certainly more of them at FreedomFest, I thought the display there was tasteless. It was just BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*-----------SILENCE------------BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*-------------------SILENCE---------------BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*BANG*, etc. The Milton fireworks has a much better sense of restraint and rhythm. Also, I thought that the individual fireworks in Milton were of higher quality than those at FreedomFest.

    3. There was rarely a silence!

At Milton the fireworks were like this: BANG------BANG------BANG--BANG--------BANG-----BANG------BANG-----------BANG. Then at the last 15 seconds or so it was like this: BANG--BANG--BANG--BANG---BANG. At Freedom Fest the show was longer and many more fireworks were shot off.

  56. So I bought an EOS-M kit with EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens.

If you take a T4i, get rid of the mirror, viewfinder, flash, flip-out screen, and make the flange distance on the mount about an inch shorter and the mount diameter several centimeters narrower, that's an EOS-M. Internally it's about the same as the T4i: same firmware (which means Magic Lantern works), same CMOS sensor, same touchscreen, same processor. And 1080p video. Only in a way smaller camera, like almost fit in your pocket smaller.

Normally it goes for $599. It was on sale at B&H (and Amazon actually) for $299. Crazy, huh?

I'm not keeping it though. My plan is to resell it on eBay for something much closer to MSRP. Might have to wait a while to do that though, I'm sure I'm not the only person with that plan and so there will probably be a dip in the resale market value.

  62. Have I ever told you how much I dislike the developing and scanning at Woodman's? Every photo had a weird dark spot in the upper right-hand corner and, worse than that the scans were polluted with digital noise. I mean honestly, what's the point of going to the trouble of shooting film if the beautiful chemical grain is going to be covered up with scanner noise. It defeats the purpose. Not to mention that the color inversion was poor, everything had a vague red cast (some more than others). That experience has completely converted me to using real labs.

    2. *You're

Do have any idea how many people "still" shoot film?

      Well, I don't either but there's quite a few.

Large format view cameras (which use 4x5 or 8x10 film) are sill the industry standard in fine art landscape photography.

Medium format film is a growing wedding photography niche.

And for those people who seem to think that taking cruddy pictures with purposely poor technical quality makes it art there's Lomography, the analogue Instagram equivalent.

  66. This place is dead. It might have something to do with the fact that all comments now require approval. Seth? Is this your fault?

    My EOS-M finally shipped.

    Do I keep it?

    Or sell it?

I DON'T KNOW. Once the sales end there will probably be a big dip in the 2nd-hand market as people sell them off. Then it should go up again, a rise which will perhaps be followed by another dip as a wave of people sell them off again with the market rise (and so making them less valuable). Then it should stabilize for six months to a year before beginning a slow(ish) but steady decline.

  69. It's really kinda' sad. Our cat is the real people-lover-type, nothing pleases him more than to be rubbed, stroked, and fed Meow-Mix. He especially adores sitting in your lap which brings me to the sad part: for some reason he never keeps his claws all the way in when he's sitting in your lap, and any sudden movement makes them come out. Because of that, having him repose in your lap is a very nerve-racking experience which means he doesn't get to enjoy the privileged as much as he would otherwise.
